The Hokutosei was a luxury sleeper train that debuted in 1988 with the opening of the Seikan Tunnel, operating between Ueno and Sapporo. It boasted exquisite facilities, including private sleeper compartments and a lobby car. In March 2008, when the Hokutosei’s operation was reduced to one round trip, cars 1 to 6 were sourced from JR Hokkaido, while cars 7 to 11 and the power car belonged to JR East.
Beginning in February 2011, due to reasons such as securing reserve cars, car 2 was modified to include open B sleepers, prominently featuring the distinctively designed OHANEFU24-500 series. With the timetable revision in March 2015, the regular operation of the Hokutosei ended, and until August of the same year, the train ran as a special service exclusively with JR East cars, marking the end of its mixed composition operation.

– Tail lights and train marks are equipped with a constant lighting board, and the OHANEFU25-0 series includes an ON-OFF switch.

– The train mark is pre-printed with “Hokutosei.”
– The OHANEFU24-500 series has no printed train mark, and no light board is installed.
