Born in the Netherlands in 1910.
After living in Italy, he became an illustrator and graphic designer in the United States.
Published nearly 30 picture books, beginning with ‘Little Blue and Little Yellow’ in 1959.
Received the prestigious Caldecott Honor for three works: ‘Swimmy’, ‘Frederick’, and ‘Alexander and the Wind-up Mouse’.
Won 21 awards across 11 works in the US and Germany as well.
Passed away in Tuscany, Italy, in 1999.
