About The Actual Aircraft
– During World War II, the United States Army developed the P-47D Thunderbolt, a large fighter aircraft.
– It was powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-2800, an 18-cylinder radial air-cooled engine known for its 2000 horsepower.
– The aircraft included an exhaust turbine which allowed it to achieve a top speed of 690 km/h.
– The first flight took place in May 1941.
– By 1943, the P-47D joined the European front.
– Initially, it escorted Allied bombers on missions from Britain to Germany, but later adapted to ground attack missions with its sturdy build until the end of the war.
– Various improvements led to the development of multiple types, with the D-type becoming the most distinguished.
– The D-type underwent significant modifications, initially featuring the ‘razorback’ design from the canopy to the tail, later evolving into models with bubble-type canopies for better visibility.
– Over 12,000 units of the D-type were produced.
